VERDI’S FIVE BEST

Verdi is the Godfather of Opera, with no fewer than 26 operas to his name. La Traviata, Rigoletto and Il Trovatore were composed in a golden flow in just five years in the 1850s, and are today some of the most performed operas in the world.

LA TRAVIATA

The colourful story of Violetta, who finally finds true honesty and tries to quit her sinful life as Paris’ leading courtesan. But alas! Violetta is struck by tuberculosis and fights in vain against the contempt of those around her and the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie, while life slowly seeps out of her.

RIGOLETTO

The court jester Rigoletto’s daughter is tricked into falling blindly in love with a cynical duke. The jester hires an assassin to kill the duke, but the plan goes awry. In the shocking final scene, Rigoletto is left with the body of his beloved daughter.

AIDA

Aida is a captive, enslaved princess who falls in love with the enemy’s young commander. Aida reluctantly becomes part of Operation Pussytrap when she gets Radamés to talk during a heated moment. The commander is convicted of treason. Aida follows him in death as they are buried alive together in a claustrophobic horror finale.

IL TROVATORE

Il Trovatore is a deeply convoluted and wonderfully untrustworthy story about a servant woman who is burned at the stake as a witch. At the execution, her daughter Azucena throws her own son into the flames. From here, a crazy, ghostly flow of revenge and conspiracy unfolds.

DON CARLO

A gripping love triangle in which the passionate young love between the king’s son Don Carlos and his beloved Elisabeth must be sacrificed for a necessary forced marriage between Elisabeth and Carlos’ father. Reason and emotion clash in Verdi’s masterpiece, which boils with dramatic intensity.
